Web Bot: Visionary of the End of Days
Are Web Bots the new visionaries?
First and foremost, what is a "bot?" A bot or an internet bot is essentially a software application designed to perform specific automated tasks over the internet, that is simple and fairly repetitive in nature, which can be done at a higher rate than a human production speed.
With that said, a Web Bot is designed to predict outcome of future events by tracking specific keywords over the internet. This program was created in the late 1990's and it was originally used to predict stock market trends. Their creators maintain their technology and algorithms secret, but do sell their predictions via their website (halfpasthuman.com). Clif High and George Ure are the creators of this application.
The application works similarly to those of the search engines (Google and Yahoo!). They simply crawl the internet at periodic intervals picking up relevant keywords for the data that needs to be analyzed.
Are they accurate? Well, I believe it's all just relative to the amount and type of data that are flying throughout the internet. I would say that if thousands of people all of a sudden started writing blogs and web pages about the apocalypse and 2012, the program may see that as a relevant activity. Given enough time and trend of inputs, it may deduce that there will be an apocalypse in the year 2012. Will it happen? Not necessarily, but as the old computer programming saying goes..."garbage in, garbage out."
It's difficult to say that they are accurate, but they have been known to predict the stock market movement with a good degree of certainty. They have also been said to have predicted the following:
- September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center
- The US Northeast blackout of 2003
- Hurricane Katrina
- Space Shuttle Columbia disaster
- Tsunami and earthquake in 2004
- Crash of American Airlines Flight 587
With it's alleged successful predictions, it has had its share of failures, such as; a massive earthquake in the Pacific Northwest around December 2008, a much more significant event than the September 11 attacks will occur in October 2008, a coastal catastrophe in mid-2009, and the collapse of the US Dollar in 2009.
A major catastrophe in October 2009 and the end of the world in 2012 has already been suggested by the program. I guess we'll wait and see...
Just like many of the Nostradamus' quatrains, many events that were presumably prophecized were not even associated with the prophecy until long after the event had already occured. This may be the case for the Web Bot theorists. If they had predicted the September 11 attacks or even the devastation of Hurricane Katrina or the East Indian Ocean tsunami, then WHY was nothing done to prevent or minimize its effect?
Cheers!
Jason
