Terence McKenna: From Hallucinations to the Visions of the End of the World!

Terence McKenna was born on November 16, 1946 and died on April 3, 2000 in Paonia, Colorado. At age 16, his family moved him to Los Altos, California to allow Terence to benefit from the highly rated California school systems. During his high school years, he was introduced to psychedelics. After graduating high school, Terence was enrolled at University of California (UC) Berkeley and was introduced to cannabis and subsequently to LSD. Experiences with psychedelic drugs would eventually be the base of his life's work.

Terence graduated from UC Berkeley in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in Ecology and Conservation. After graduating from college, Terence moved to Japan to teach English and spent many of his free time travelling to India and South Asia collecting specimens for biological supply companies.

In 1971, Terence, his brother (Dennis), and three friends travelled to the Colombian Amazon in search of the oo-koo-he, a psychedelic plant. Although they were not able to locate the oo-koo-he plant, their expedition was not a complete failure. They instead found various other psychedelic plants, known as ayahuasca and gigantic psilocybe cubensis. This find would become their new focus. Their agenda was to perform psychedelic experiments which would put them in touch with a divine voice that was believed to be a universal visionary, known as Logos. Terence would be the primary subject of this experiment.

From the revelations of this voice, Terence was prompted to explore I-Ching , which would lead to his novelty theory of the " Timewave Zero " concept. The concept essentially referenced the end of the world in the year 2012. Terence deduced the specific year by using a combination of numerology (I-Ching) and complex mathematics. The combination of numbers produced specific ebbs and flows of specific events that occured throughout history. He utilized the bombing of Hiroshima as a specific point in time and it followed a cycle of 67.29 years. The graph stopped at December 21, 2012.

Terence McKenna would go on to write a book about his experiences in the Colombian Amazon called "True Hallucinations" and it became a popular fixture with counterculture. He became a celebrity with the rave/trance era of the 1990's, in which many of his speeches were sampled for different albums.

Terence passed away in 2003 while spending time at a non-profit preserve in Hawaii.

Here's a short interview with Terence with regards to his "Timewave Zero" concept:
