Survival: Preparing for Natural Disasters and the Post Apocalypse
Survival: Preparing for natural disasters and the post apocalypse…
One of the reasons Jason and I decided to get involved with this project is the concept of disaster preparedness. Our training has taught us a lot about preparations and establishing guidelines to follow in the event of casualties. We both agree that the key to success in any endeavor is the preparation that goes into the execution. I submit that we are not alone in that thought process and you are here to explore options in getting prepared.
The first steps in getting ready include education. Getting the sufficient level of knowledge in paramount in understanding how to make plans. After all, if I do not understand the issues how can I deal with them? How can I plan for survival if I do not know what I will be trying to prepare for? Understanding the different scenarios and then understanding the unique issues related to them will help us get better prepared.
Our intention is to explore the different types of natural disasters and then delve deeper into each one with regards to its unique hazards and what to do to prepare for them. We do not (at this time) claim to be experts in the field of survival…but we do claim to have significant experience in planning, mobilizing and executing contingency plans for a wide variety of issues.
Explore these topics with us as we discuss how to survive the post apocalypse:
Typhoon: These are significantly large storms that occur in the Western Pacific. A tropical depression (a large storm) becomes a typhoon when its winds reach a sustained speed of 74 miles per hour. These are typically the largest storms on earth.
Hurricane: These are exactly like the typhoon except that they are typically associated with the eastern pacific and Atlantic oceans. These are also significantly large but usually smaller than typhoons. Destruction can be significant.
Tsunami: Large waves caused by various reasons but usually seismic activity crash into shore lines. The sudden influx of the large waves over run the area and floods vast areas in mere moments. These come very quickly with little warning and have caused millions of dollars worth of damage and the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives.
Earthquake: Movement of the earth as the planets tectonic plates rub against one another cause the ground to shake. In severe earthquakes entire cities can be destroyed. The devastation of earthquakes can be very significant because they have been known to cause tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and fires in their wake.
Volcanic eruption: Areas where the crust is weakened, typically around tectonic plate boundaries, can be found populated with volcanoes. These can provide a channel for the hot molten lava beneath the earth’s crust to bubble up to the surface. Sometimes the pressure can build up and undergo a violent eruption of hot lava and ash. History has shown that these events can affect both the local area and in some cases the entire world.
Floods: People live on land. They walk. They do not live in water… storms, tsunami, possibly earthquakes, and failure of dams can cause a sudden influx of water to normally “dry” areas where people live. Floods have been associated with such large areas of destruction that current day insurance practices provide for a separate contracting for flood coverage. (Floods have shown to cost so much money that the professional insurance companies do not regularly cover damages associate with them…instead they offer separate insurance policies so they can attempt to limit the possible losses)
Blizzards: I don’t know much about these yet…but I do know that there have been some devastating ones in the past. Survival in a blizzard will involve additional preparations.
Be Good!
