Mayan predictions of December 21, 2012 is supposed to be the end. Why?
The Mayan predictions of the apocalypse in 2012, in my opinion, was fabricated by modern western civilizations and not the Mayans. There are many similarities to the end of their long count calendar (December 21, 2012) to many other cultures pointing to the end of the world in 2012. The History Channel has aired on numerous occasions that at the end of each calendar cycle (5126 years), the world ended in destruction and at the end of this cycle will be the same. To date, I have found no apocalypse timeline which relate specifically to the end of each cycle.
The Mayans were a thriving culture, located primarily in what is now known as the Yucatan Peninsula (Guatemala, Honduras, and El
Salvador). They had a fully developed system of writing and
speaking, advanced architectural and mathematical skills, and well known for their arts and knowledge of the celestial system. Recent Mayan carbon dating of their artifacts, dates their civilization to about 2500 BC. Many of the Mayans were believed to have disappeared almost without a trace, probably due to diseases or famine brought on by explorers for the New World. They left behind a puzzle that has peaked the curiosity of many scholars and novices (like me) wondering about why the Mayan calendar suddenly stops at December 21, 2012.
Mayans also practiced human sacrifice and believed in the cyclical nature of time. They believed that knowing the past influences the future. Their predictions of celestial movements are accurate even to today's standards. To date, their religion still has many scholars theorizing what the context of their religion really signified. This could be one of the many reasons that westerners opted to believe that a Mayan prophecy of a major flood in 2012 will cause the demise of the world, hence the end of days prophecy.
Another theory to the Mayan predictions is that on December 21,
2012, the Sun will be in a galactic alignment with the center of the galaxy. During this alignment of the Sun and the black hole that is located in the center of the galaxy, the Earth will suffer severe gravitational disruptions, which also coincides with the shifting of Earth's axis. This severe gravitational disruption may be a possible catalyst for a flooding of biblical proportion. Maybe it's time to build a "Noah's Ark 2," just kidding... =D
Perhaps, the curiousity of an apocalypse in 2012 is great because of the many similarities of the highest solar activities which will occur in 2012, the galactic alignment coincides with 2012 and the Mayan calendar 2012, or maybe it's just the fear of the unknown.
If you ask me, this is a subject that many people will continue to talk about. With so many events occuring within about the same timeframe, it's no wonder that 2012 apocalypse is becoming more and more popular. Mix this in with a few prophecies with media overexposure of the apocalypse and there you have it, people start getting curious (and continue their curiosity) about the end of the world.
Cheers!
