Biblical Prophecy: The Revelation Apocalypse And Other Bible Signs Of The Apocalypse
Biblical prophecy: What does the Bible tell us to expect?
I don't know about you but I have read the book of Revelations a few times and had a very hard time understanding it. What I do know is that to me it stands as the largest biblical prophecy. There are several prophecies found throughout the bible, but this is an entire book relating to the revelation apocalypse. It is worthy to discuss all on it's own...and we will. But for now lets take a brief look at some of the details of this prophecy and at some of the other prophecies found elsewhere in the bible.
The revelation apocalypse is found to reference the number seven through out. It is very striking in its detail and very creative (imaginative) if you ask me. First there are the seven candlesticks that represent the seven churches. Then the seven stars are seen which represent the angels of the seven churches. Then a scroll is seen in the right hand of the "one on the throne" and it is closed with the seven seals. The lamb who was found worthy breaks the seven seals and opens the scrolls. Then the four horsemen of the apocalypse come who are followed by seven angels with seven trumpets. If the number seven was not yet repeated enough, there are an additional seven angels holding seven final plagues given seven bowls containing God's wrath. The two witnesses are given extreme powers but are eventually defeated and their bodies lay in the streets for three days. The beast rises from the abyss and has seven heads with ten horns. The beast chases the woman into the desert where she hides. A second beast rises and assists to force all men to place the seal of the beast on their forehead or right hand. Eventually the seven headed beast is defeated, chained and thrown into the firey depths along with its helper beast. Peace reigns for a thousand years.
Prophecy is strewn throughout the bible also. Many predictions about the arrival of Jesus, including the immaculate conception, his triumphant entry on the back of a mule on Palm Sunday are just a few. Others predict the demise of tribes and kings. Many of these biblical prophecies are shown to have come true and validated in later passages in the bible. One notable instance is the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem.
Lets take a look at some of the more popular topics as related to the Bible Signs of the Apocalypse:
Four horsemen of the apocalypse
: As the seven seals are broken by the lamb the four horsemen appear. The first is the white horse and its rider has a bow. The second is a red horse whose rider has the power to rob the world of peace and is given a sword. The third is a black horse with a rider who has a pair of scales in his hand. The last is a sickly horse with none other than Death as his rider.
Seven signs of the apocalypse
: While no real reference is made in the bible to look for these seven signs, popular culture has ascribed these seven signs to pasages in the biblical prophecy of revelation apocalypse. It seems most associate the seven signs with the seven seals on the scrolls, the seven angels with the seven trumpets, or the seven final plagues.
Apocalypse of John
: the topic we have been reviewing here- the end of days biblical prophecy of revelations.
Apocalypse of Peter
: A very descriptive view of the punishments one could expect in hell for sins. This text is controversial because it is recognized by some early churches but omitted by others however it does have a history back to at least the first century.
Apocalypse of Abraham
: A text not recognized by most religions that describes Abraham's experiences as he converts, conducts sacrifices to God, and eventually is taken to meet God where the end of days are revealed to him.
Prophet Daniel: From the time period of about 600 BCE, Daniel writes of several visions (dreams). The first lays a ground work for the rest which all lead up to a culmination in armegeddon. To me this is one of the most interesting writings of the revelation apocalypse. To me it bears a striking resemblance to the biblical prophecy of John.
