Apocalypse Of Abraham: A Straight Forward Explanation Of The End Of Days.
The Apocalypse of Abraham comes to us in ancient texts that are believed to be from the late first or early second century. For reasons I do not understand this text is not well read by the Christians- evidently it is not recognized as scripture. When I read it I see parallels so significant that it baffles my mind that this text was not included.
Abraham, a character from the earliest of times of the Bible, had out grown his previous religious practices of idol worship and has embraced God. As a reward for his faith he is visited by an angel who carries Abraham to the heavens for an audience with God after he completes the sacrifices he was instructed to perform.
In the heavens, Abraham is taken to the seventh level where he speaks directly with God. Abraham is given several visions and he sees, among other things, several of the levels below. The 6th where the pure spirits live who follow the orders of the firey angels from above. The 5th where the stars reside. As he sees the stars, he is promised off spring of his seed that will equal in number to the stars.
Here is where the Apocalypse of Abraham shows the coming end of days. A picture of men divided between those who are faithful and those who are not is shown to Abraham and discussions ensue. Soon God explains:
Before the age of righteousness begins to start God's judgment will come upon the wicked and lawless. During this time ten plagues will afflict the earth. When these plagues are completed all that remain will be the righteous people who have kept faith with God who will all be brought to a place that was prepared for them by God.
Abraham is ushered back to earth and he laments to God that he still hungers for knowledge of the end of days. God agrees to disclose more because he feels Abraham's heart is pure. Here he describes the ten plagues. (well...more like lists them):
1. Distressing pain of sickness
2. Conflagration of cities
3. Destruction and pestilence of animals
4. Famine
5. Destruction among rulers, earthquakes, wars
6. Hail and snow
7. Attack of the wild beasts
8. Famine combined with pestilence alternating with destruction
9. Punishment by the sword and flight in distress
10. Storms and earthquakes
Following these ten plagues God's chosen one arrives who gathers the faithful while God sends fire upon the others...their ultimate destiny to be food for the fires of hell.
The Apocalypse of Abraham, like many other texts from the time, is very interesting to me. The symbology here seems very fluid and matches extremely well with that found in the other writings, including the Bible.
